Vaucluse Boys' High School
Class of 1968
When Vaucluse Boys' High School was opened in 1960 it took as its emblem the nearby Macquarie Lighthouse (designed by convict architect Francis Greenway) and adopted as its motto "Lumen Scientiae" - the Light of Learning - for just as the lighthouse guides ships into the harbour, so the light of learning, as taught at the school, guides its students into the harbour of a secure adulthood.
School Song & Hymn
Our School Song was composed at the end of the '50s by an old-worldy gentleman, the highly respected Mr A W Howarth, the school's founding deputy principal. There are two optimistic verses and a rousing chorus.
The School Hymn, a single, stately verse in Latin, was composed by the founding music master, the genius Dieter Kloessing. We sang them every Monday morning at assembly.
The War-Cry, penned by the founding sportsmaster, Mr Ted Gill, was rarely chanted.
